Karachi Expands Rickshaw Ban to 26 Major Roads Amid Traffic Crisis

KARACHI: Authorities have widened the ban on two- and four-seater rickshaws in Karachi, adding six more major roads to the list already restricted under Section 144 as part of efforts to manage the city’s increasingly chaotic traffic.

The order, issued Thursday by Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi, follows a recommendation from DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah. The latest directive expands an earlier notification from October 17, 2025, which barred rickshaws from 20 major roads.

With the new additions — including Shahrah-e-Faisal — the ban now covers 26 key arteries across the metropolis.

The restricted routes now include:
Sharea Faisal, II Chundrigar Road, Shahrah-e-Quaideen, Shershah Suri Road, Shaheed-e-Millat Road, Abdullah Haroon Road to Do Talwar, Shahrah-e-Firdousi, Stadium Road, Sir Shah Suleman Road, Rashid Minhas Road, Mauripur Road, Shahrah-e-Pakistan, Hub River Road, Quaidabad to Landhi 89, University Road, Korangi Road (FTC to Qayyumabad), Korangi Road (Qayyumabad to Korangi Crossing), Orangi Road, Super Highway to Malir Halt, Surjani to Sohrab Goth, and others.

Traffic Pressures Prompt Stricter Controls

The move comes as Karachi grapples with worsening congestion, prompting public frustration and urgent government intervention. In response, the Sindh government has already enforced a daytime ban on heavy vehicles and imposed a 30 km/h speed limit for HTVs within city limits.

According to a recent traffic police report, a key contributor to the gridlock is the large number of rickshaws operating without official permits. These vehicles frequently take unauthorized routes and obstruct traffic flow on major corridors, posing both safety risks and operational challenges for traffic management.

Aimed at Relieving Urban Gridlock

Officials say the expanded restrictions are designed to restore smoother mobility and improve road safety across the city’s most vital commercial and residential routes.

The enforcement of Section 144 will remain in place as authorities continue monitoring traffic patterns and evaluating the impact of the crackdown on unregulated rickshaw operations.
