Pakistan Police Targeted in Deadly KP Blast: Rising Terror Threats

KP Blast Claims Lives of Six Policemen in Tank District

KP Blast on Monday targeted an armoured police vehicle in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tank district, killing at least six officers, including Additional Station House Officer Ishaq Khan. The improvised explosive device (IED) detonated on Gomal Bazaar road as the vehicle was returning from Gomal Police Station, according to local authorities. This tragic incident highlights the dangers faced by law enforcement in the region, particularly in light of the recent surge in KP Blast incidents.

Law enforcement teams immediately reached the scene, cordoned off the area, and launched an investigation into the deadly attack, which has raised alarm over escalating violence against security personnel in the province.

The impact of the KP Blast has sent shockwaves throughout the community, prompting calls for increased security measures and support for the families of the victims.

The KP blast destroyed the armoured vehicle, leaving several officers martyred on site. Law enforcement agencies confirmed the identities of the victims, including senior officers, and began collecting forensic evidence to identify the attackers. The assault highlights the persistent threat posed by militants in KP’s tribal districts, where security forces frequently face targeted violence.

Condolences from National Leaders For KP Blast

President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi expressed deep grief over the incident. In their statements, they offered prayers for the eternal peace of the martyred officers and extended heartfelt condolences to their families, emphasising Pakistan’s commitment to combating terrorism.

Recent Attacks on KP Police

The Tank incident comes a week after four police personnel were killed in separate attacks in Lakki Marwat and Bannu districts. In Lakki Marwat, three traffic police officers were shot by unidentified motorcyclists, while in Bannu, constable Rashid Khan was killed while commuting to duty.

These attacks underscore a surge in targeted assaults on law enforcement, particularly in provinces bordering Afghanistan, which have experienced increased militant activity since the Afghan Taliban’s takeover in 2021.

Counterterrorism Operations Across KP

Authorities have responded with intensified counterterror operations. On Sunday, the KP Police and Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) neutralised eight terrorists during operations in Bannu, Khyber, and Zahir Garhi. Weapons, mobile devices, and explosives were recovered, and several militants involved in attacks on security forces were eliminated.

KP Inspector General Zulfiqar Hameed praised the bravery of officers and pledged continued operations to maintain law and order. ISPR Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry highlighted that over 67,000 intelligence-based operations have been conducted across Pakistan in 2025, resulting in the elimination of 1,873 terrorists, including foreign nationals.

Rising Terror Threats and Regional Security

The Tank IED attack reflects broader security challenges in Pakistan’s bordering provinces. Islamabad has repeatedly urged the Afghan Taliban regime to prevent its territory from being used for cross-border attacks. Previous cross-border incidents have prompted retaliatory strikes, raising concerns over escalation in the region.

As militant activity intensifies, KP remains at the forefront of Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts, with authorities committed to neutralising threats and ensuring the safety of citizens and law enforcement personnel.
