Mehmood Khan Achakzai, opposition leader, has formally become the Leader of the Opposition in Pakistan’s National Assembly, ending months of uncertainty surrounding the crucial parliamentary position amid an increasingly polarised political environment.

The National Assembly Secretariat issued an official notification on Friday following approval by Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, confirming Achakzai’s appointment with effect from January 16, 2026. The Speaker personally handed over the notification to opposition members, marking the formal completion of the process.

Appointment Notification and Legal Basis

According to the notification issued by Acting Secretary of the National Assembly Saeed Ahmad Maitla, the decision was taken under Rule 39 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly, 2007. The post of opposition leader had remained vacant for several months, limiting the opposition’s formal parliamentary coordination and representation.

Achakzai currently heads the Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) and is also the chief of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP). His parliamentary experience and cross-party engagement were cited by opposition lawmakers as key factors behind his nomination.

Background to the Leadership Vacancy

The position fell vacant after former opposition leader Omar Ayub was disqualified following a 10-year prison sentence in a case related to the May 9 unrest. Subsequently, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan nominated Achakzai for the role, signalling a strategic move to consolidate opposition unity within parliament.

A delegation of opposition lawmakers, including PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Junaid Akbar, Aamir Dogar, Shahram Khan Tarakai, Latif Khosa, and Jamal Ahsan Khan, met Speaker Ayaz Sadiq in his chamber ahead of the notification.

PTI Endorsement and Political Reactions

Reacting to the development, PTI leader Omar Ayub congratulated Achakzai, calling the appointment a “singular honour” and expressing confidence in his ability to fulfil the responsibilities effectively.

Senior PTI figures have repeatedly stated that Achakzai holds the party’s mandate to engage in dialogue with the ruling coalition. Speaking to Geo News, PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi confirmed that Imran Khan had authorised Achakzai to negotiate with the government on behalf of the opposition as an Opposition Leader.

Significance of Achakzai’s Appointment

The appointment carries broader political implications, as Achakzai has long been a vocal proponent of an inclusive national dialogue involving all major political stakeholders to help steer Pakistan out of its prolonged political and institutional instability. Known for his conciliatory tone, Achakzai has repeatedly emphasised the need for consensus-based politics to reduce polarisation and restore democratic norms.

His elevation comes at a particularly sensitive moment, when relations between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) remain deeply strained, with little visible progress toward reconciliation. The political environment continues to be marked by mistrust, legal battles, and competing narratives over legitimacy and governance.

Since the removal of former prime minister Imran Khan through a no-confidence vote in April 2022, PTI has organised multiple protest marches toward Islamabad, many of which have resulted in mass arrests, clashes with law enforcement, and disruptions to civic life. Against this backdrop, Achakzai’s appointment is being viewed by analysts as a potential attempt to open political space for dialogue at a time of heightened tensions.

Political Deadlock and Dialogue Debate

The political climate remains tense, with several senior PTI leaders, including Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Yasmin Rashid, currently incarcerated in connection with the May 9 incidents.

Earlier this month, PML-N Senator Rana Sanaullah stressed the need for confidence-building among Pakistan’s top political leadership, suggesting that meaningful progress was impossible without engagement at the highest level. However, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan rejected the proposal, maintaining that any dialogue must include Imran Khan directly.

As Mehmood Khan Achakzai opposition leader, attention now shifts to whether his appointment can help break the political stalemate or merely formalise existing divisions within Pakistan’s parliamentary system.
