Monsoon Rains Claim 111 Lives, Injure 212 in Pakistan: NDMA

Monsoon rains have wreaked havoc across Pakistan, with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reporting 111 deaths and 212 injuries from rain-related incidents between June 26 and July 14, 2025. As heavy rainfall continues, authorities warn of further risks, urging citizens to stay vigilant.

The NDMA’s latest report highlights flash flooding as the primary cause of fatalities, with structural collapses, electrocutions, and other weather-related hazards contributing to the crisis. In the last 24 hours alone, six additional deaths were recorded, emphasizing the ongoing threat. Punjab reported the highest death toll with 40 fatalities, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 37, Sindh with 17, and Balochistan with 16. One death was reported in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, with no casualties in Gilgit-Baltistan or Islamabad.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast torrential rains, accompanied by wind and thunderstorms, from July 15 to July 17, 2025. A low-pressure area over northwest Madhya Pradesh, India, combined with a westerly wave, is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Islamabad. This could exacerbate flooding risks, particularly in low-lying and urban areas. The NDMA has urged local administrations to prepare emergency response teams and advised residents to avoid floodwaters and stay updated via the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert app.

The monsoon season, vital for agriculture, has caused significant damage to infrastructure, with 463 houses and nine bridges affected nationwide. The NDMA is coordinating with provincial authorities to provide relief, including tents, food packets, and medical supplies, to affected communities. With more rain expected, authorities emphasize proactive measures to mitigate further loss of life and property.
