On August 20, 2025, Kabul is hosting a trilateral meeting between the foreign ministers of Pakistan and China, alongside Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. In a significant diplomatic development, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, accompanied by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, has arrived in Kabul for a pivotal trilateral meeting. The Afghanistan foreign ministry confirmed the gathering, which marks the first such meeting in Kabul since the Taliban took control.

The talks, expected to last the entire day, will focus on key issues such as deepening counter-terrorism collaboration, advancing the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) through Afghanistan, and strengthening regional connectivity and trade. The discussions are aimed at fostering relations based on shared interests, mutual understanding, and long-term cooperation.

In addition to the trilateral talks, Wang Yi will meet with senior Taliban leaders to discuss political and economic cooperation between China and Afghanistan. The trilateral diplomatic efforts are part of broader initiatives to stabilize the region and enhance cooperation among the three neighboring countries.

Following the Kabul summit, Foreign Minister Wang is set to travel to Islamabad to co-chair the sixth Pakistan-China Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue on August 21, 2025. This high-level dialogue will further build on the long-standing relationship between Pakistan and China, reinforcing their strategic partnership and collaboration across economic, security, and development sectors.

Wang’s visit comes after several rounds of dialogue aimed at bolstering the China-Pakistan relationship, with the last strategic dialogue held in Beijing in May 2024. The discussions will cover a wide range of topics, including agricultural cooperation, mining, industry, and security, continuing to fortify their all-weather strategic cooperative partnership.

The trilateral engagement in Kabul represents a broader effort to ensure regional peace, stability, and prosperity through close collaboration between Pakistan, China, and Afghanistan.
