On Friday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Dr. Fouzia Siddiqui to discuss ongoing efforts concerning her sister’s case. Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, who was convicted in 2010 on charges of attempted murder and assault following an incident with US authorities in Afghanistan, has been serving an 86-year sentence in the United States. Her conviction remains controversial, with many asserting her innocence.

The Pakistani government has been actively involved in advocating for Dr. Aafia’s release. Prime Minister Sharif highlighted that the government has been and will continue to be fully engaged in the matter. He mentioned that efforts have included legal support, as well as diplomatic interventions, such as writing a letter to former US President Joe Biden seeking clemency for Dr. Aafia, though no relief was granted.

The Prime Minister also shared that a committee has been established to further advance the case. Headed by Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar, this committee will maintain regular communication with Dr. Fouzia Siddiqui to ensure the necessary support is provided and to work on additional legal strategies.

Further complicating Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s situation, her human rights lawyer, Clive Stafford Smith, revealed in June last year that Dr. Aafia has been subjected to continuous physical and sexual abuse while incarcerated at the Fort Worth facility in Texas. These disturbing claims of mistreatment have intensified calls for justice and a reevaluation of her case.

The Pakistani government remains committed to advocating for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, emphasizing that her case continues to be a priority, and diplomatic efforts will persist until a resolution is found.
