Punjab Monsoon Rains Leave 21 Dead
Punjab monsoon rains have caused widespread destruction across the province, leaving at least 21 people dead and 154 others injured in rain-related incidents, according to figures released by the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
The casualties have been linked to roof and building collapses, electrocution, lightning strikes, drowning and other accidents caused by intense rainfall. The latest spell has placed emergency services and local administrations on high alert across several districts.
Lahore Records 343mm Rainfall in 48 Hours
Lahore has emerged as one of the worst-affected areas, recording approximately 343 millimetres of rain over a 48-hour period. The intense downpour has caused severe urban flooding, waterlogging and major disruptions to traffic and daily life.
Several roads, underpasses and low-lying areas were inundated as rainwater accumulated across the provincial capital. Authorities launched extensive drainage operations, deploying pumps and emergency teams to clear affected routes and restore movement.
The heavy rainfall also affected electricity infrastructure and created additional risks for residents travelling through flooded streets.
Roof Collapses and Electrocution Among Main Causes
According to PDMA data, building and roof collapses accounted for the largest share of fatalities in Punjab during the latest rain spell. The authority reported that 15 of the 21 deaths were caused by structural collapses.
Two people were killed by lightning strikes, while three others died from electrocution. One person also drowned in a rain-related incident. The PDMA further reported partial damage to 38 houses.
The figures have renewed concerns about the vulnerability of poorly maintained buildings and weak structures during periods of extreme rainfall.
Authorities Intensify Rescue and Drainage Operations
Rescue teams, district administrations and municipal agencies are continuing operations in affected areas. Emergency personnel are working to clear flooded roads, assist stranded residents and respond to reports of structural damage.
Lahore experienced widespread waterlogging, with more than 130 locations affected by standing water during the latest spell. Several roads and underpasses faced temporary disruption as authorities worked to drain accumulated rainwater.
Officials have also warned of the continued risk of urban flooding and flash floods as further rainfall remains possible in parts of the province.
Public Urged to Follow Safety Measures
Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain and stay away from flooded roads, low-lying areas and damaged buildings. Citizens have also been advised to maintain a safe distance from electric wires, utility poles and other electrical infrastructure.
Parents have been asked to keep children away from standing water and potentially dangerous areas during the ongoing weather emergency.
The Punjab monsoon rains have once again highlighted the need for stronger urban drainage systems, safer construction practices and improved disaster preparedness. While seasonal rainfall remains essential for agriculture and water resources, extreme downpours can quickly create serious risks for communities.
