Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appointed Qatari royal Sheikha Asma Al Thani as Pakistan’s Brand Ambassador for Mountains and Tourism, celebrating her historic summit of Nanga Parbat, the world’s ninth-highest peak, known as the ‘Killer Mountain,’ in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Sheikha Asma’s conquest of the treacherous 8,126-meter peak, notorious for its extreme weather and hazardous terrain, marks her ninth 8,000-meter climb and a milestone in her mountaineering career. In a post on X, PM Sharif lauded her courage and resilience, stating, “Her achievement sends a powerful message of determination and strengthens the enduring friendship between Pakistan and Qatar.” The appointment aims to promote Pakistan’s stunning mountainous landscapes and tourism potential globally.
Reflecting on her climb via Instagram, Sheikha Asma described Nanga Parbat as one of her toughest challenges, citing black ice and frequent rockfalls. “This mountain tested me in unexpected ways, reminding me how fragile life is,” she wrote, emphasizing personal growth and reconnection through mountaineering. Her feat underscores Pakistan’s appeal as a premier destination for adventure tourism.
