In a chilling development, Gul Jan, a woman from Balochistan, was remanded to police custody for two days after she confessed in a viral video to killing her daughter, Bano Bibi, in the name of “honour.” The confession has sparked outrage, and authorities are continuing their investigation into the double murder case in the Sanjidi area near Quetta.
A court in Quetta has remanded Gul Jan, the mother of Bano Bibi, to the Serious Crime Investigation Wing for two days after she admitted to the “honour killing” of her daughter. The confession was made in a widely circulated video, in which Gul Jan is seen holding the Holy Quran and claiming responsibility for the murder, citing tribal customs as justification. She further stated that the elders of her tribe were not involved in the decision.
The incident, which occurred approximately six weeks ago in the Degari area near Quetta, saw Bano Bibi and a man named Ehsanullah shot dead in what police have described as an honour-related killing. The video, which showed more than a dozen tribal men in a remote desert area, has caused a wave of shock and condemnation. In the footage, a man shoots Bano Bibi in the back before turning the weapon on Ehsanullah and killing him as well.
Investigating officer Javed Buzdar confirmed that Gul Jan was arrested after the video surfaced on social media, leading to widespread outrage. In addition to Gul Jan, two other suspects, Sardar Sherbaz and Bashir Ahmed, are already in police custody and are under a 10-day remand for further investigation. Authorities are continuing to conduct raids to apprehend other suspects connected to the case.
Following the video’s viral spread, the Balochistan government registered a case under terrorism charges, with Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti condemning the incident as “heinous.” The case has been filed under various sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, including murder and rioting, as well as the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.
The case has drawn attention to the ongoing issue of honour killings in the region, with authorities now focusing on bringing all those responsible to justice.
