Elon Musk has unveiled Grokipedia, a new AI-driven online encyclopedia created by his company xAI, positioning it as a direct rival to Wikipedia, which the billionaire has long criticized for alleged ideological bias.
Launched this week under the tagline “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” Grokipedia’s initial release—labeled version 0.1—already hosts more than 885,000 articles, according to Musk. While that figure is still far smaller than Wikipedia’s more than seven million English-language entries, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO says the platform will grow rapidly.
“The goal of Grok and Grokipedia.com is the truth. We will never be perfect, but we shall nonetheless strive toward that goal,” Musk wrote on his social media platform, X. He also promised a major upgrade, teasing that version 1.0 would be “10 times better” than the current edition, which he claimed already outperforms Wikipedia.
The project had originally been scheduled for release in late September but was delayed to “purge out the propaganda,” Musk said in a separate post.
Grokipedia’s content is generated through artificial intelligence, particularly leveraging the capabilities of Grok, xAI’s generative AI assistant integrated with X. Early articles appear to reflect Musk’s own ethos—one entry about him notes his influence on “technological progress, demographic debates, and institutional bias,” while highlighting criticism from “legacy media outlets” accused of leaning left.
Musk’s skepticism toward Wikipedia is well-documented. In 2024, he described the platform as “controlled by far-left activists” and urged users to stop donating to it. He has also argued that Wikipedia should not be treated as a reliable source for X’s Community Notes feature because of what he calls its “extremely left-biased” editorial oversight.
Wikipedia, founded in 2001, remains one of the most-visited sites in the world. It operates as a non-profit organization maintained by volunteers and funded largely through public donations. The platform emphasizes a “neutral point of view” policy, though it has faced periodic criticism over editorial disputes and political bias.
As of now, Wikipedia has not responded to requests for comment regarding Grokipedia’s launch.
Whether Musk’s new venture will attract contributors and credibility comparable to its long-standing rival remains to be seen—but its debut underscores his growing effort to reshape the digital information landscape through AI.
