Ali Zafar defamation suit against Meesha Shafi to be Decided Within 30 Days
The Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered the trial court to conclude the Ali Zafar defamation suit against Meesha Shafi within a 30-day period, reaffirming the earlier decision that barred the artist from making statements against the singer on all media platforms.
Justice Ahmad Nadeem Arshad announced the verdict on a petition filed by Shafi challenging a trial court order dated January 24, 2019, which imposed restrictions on her public statements regarding Zafar.
LHC Upholds Interim Injunction Against Meesha Shafi
The LHC upheld the trial court’s order, calling it “well-reasoned” and grounded in “sound legal principles.” The judgment emphasized that discretionary orders, particularly those involving interim injunctions, should not be interfered with unless proven arbitrary, perverse, or jurisdictionally flawed.

“This Court is mindful of the settled principle that discretionary orders passed by a competent court, particularly those relating to grant or refusal of interim injunction, should not be interfered with in constitutional jurisdiction unless the same are shown to be arbitrary, perverse, or suffering from a jurisdictional defect,” the judgment stated.
Background of the Defamation Suit
Ali Zafar filed the defamation suit in 2018, seeking damages of Rs1 billion under the Defamation Ordinance 2002. The suit was filed after Meesha Shafi publicly accused him of sexual harassment.
In April 2018, Shafi had posted on Twitter (now X), alleging that Zafar had physically harassed her on multiple occasions. Following these allegations, Zafar contended that Shafi’s statements had severely harmed his reputation.

Legal Analysis and Judgment Details
The LHC’s ruling confirms the trial court’s interim injunction, barring Shafi from making further statements against Zafar across any media, including social platforms. The court directed the trial court to decide the entire defamation suit within 30 days, signaling a move toward a final resolution in the long-standing legal battle.
Legal experts say this decision could set a precedent regarding social media defamation cases involving public figures in Pakistan, balancing freedom of expression with reputational rights.
Public and Media Reactions
The case has remained under intense media scrutiny since its inception. Fans and observers on social media have been divided, reflecting broader societal debates over sexual harassment allegations, the #MeToo movement, and the legal accountability of celebrities.
The upcoming 30-day decision timeline is expected to draw renewed attention from both the entertainment industry and the general public.
