Victory Monument Islamabad Inaugurated Ahead of Independence Day/
ISLAMABAD: The Victory Monument Islamabad, formally known as Yadgar-e-Fatah, was inaugurated on Thursday night by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, marking a major national ceremony on the eve of Pakistan’s 80th Independence Day. The monument has been constructed to honour the country’s martyrs and commemorate what the government describes as Pakistan’s victory in Marka-e-Haq.
President Zardari attended the ceremony as chief guest, while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir were among the senior officials present.
National Leadership Attends Inauguration
Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf also attended the ceremony, alongside federal ministers, senior civil and military officials, foreign dignitaries and families of martyrs.
The ceremony featured contingents from Pakistan’s armed forces, civil armed forces and police formations from Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Police contingents from Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan also participated.
A formal guard of honour was presented as the national anthem was played by a military band, reflecting the ceremonial significance of the occasion.
Monument Honours Martyrs and Marka-e-Haq
The Victory Monument Islamabad has been dedicated to the sacrifices of Pakistan’s martyrs and the events surrounding Marka-e-Haq.
The state uses the term Marka-e-Haq, meaning “Battle of Truth,” for the May 2025 military confrontation between Pakistan and India. The conflict followed the April 22 Pahalgam attack and ended with a ceasefire on May 10 following Operation Bunyanum Marsoos.
During the inauguration, Prime Minister Shehbaz paid tribute to the armed forces and acknowledged the contribution of those involved in designing and completing the monument.
According to Dawn, the structure was completed in eight months. The prime minister also praised its design and construction.
Five Archways Reflect Monument’s Symbolism
The marble structure features five prominent archways. According to reports, these represent the five pillars of Islam and five pillars identified in the monument’s design as the government, military, media, people and national ideology.
The monument also incorporates symbolism associated with Pakistan’s three armed services, cyber defence and space warfare.
The design therefore combines religious, national and defence-related symbolism into a single landmark intended to represent Pakistan’s identity and military history.
Light and Sound Show Marks Inauguration
A major feature of the ceremony was a permanent projection-mapping system installed at the monument. The technology allows light, music and moving visuals to be projected across its architectural surface.
The inauguration included a light and sound presentation highlighting episodes from Pakistan’s history and military achievements. Visuals from the May 2025 conflict were also displayed on the monument.
The ceremony concluded with a Pakistan Air Force flypast, with fighter aircraft performing over the monument and deploying flares across the Islamabad night sky.
