Ali Amin Gandapur Resigns as KP Chief Minister Following Imran Khan’s Orders Amid Party Tensions

PESHAWAR — In a significant political development, Ali Amin Gandapur has stepped down as the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), following directives from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan. The resignation, announced on Wednesday, has set the stage for Sohail Afridi to assume the top provincial leadership role.

Gandapur, a firebrand PTI leader, shared the news on social media, expressing his compliance with Khan’s instructions. He stated, “In respectful compliance of the orders of my leader, and founding PTI chairman, Imran Khan, it is my honour to tender my resignation from the Office of the Chief Minister, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.” The outgoing chief minister cited his tenure as a period marked by significant challenges, including financial instability and the ongoing threat of terrorism. He reflected on the restoration of the province’s financial health, largely credited to the hard work of his cabinet, party members, and provincial officials.

The PTI leader acknowledged the support of his team, stating, “I served with absolute sincerity to the people of KP and always acted in the best interest of Pakistan,” though he admitted not every challenge had been overcome during his leadership. His resignation follows a confirmation from PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, who also verified that Afridi was the new candidate for the CM position.

Raja emphasized that Gandapur’s resignation was in accordance with Khan’s wishes, aiming to address growing concerns within the party and the provincial government. The PTI official also hinted at a fresh policy direction for the province, while stressing that the ongoing wave of terrorism in KP would require a shift in strategy.

Further complicating the situation within the party, internal rifts had recently emerged, notably between Gandapur and his sister, Aleema Khan, with allegations and counter-allegations surfacing publicly. This discord prompted Khan, who remains in prison, to intervene and instruct both his sister and Gandapur to cease making inflammatory remarks.

Tensions within the PTI appear to have been escalating for some time. Gandapur’s resignation marks the culmination of internal political struggles, with the power dynamics of the party being continuously influenced by personal and political rivalries.

Political analysts suggest that Gandapur’s resignation could signal a consolidation of power within PTI’s leadership, potentially positioning Aleema Khan for a more significant role within the party. However, many remain skeptical about whether the shift will lead to greater unity or further division within PTI ranks.

Gandapur’s departure follows PTI’s growing concern over security issues, with increasing incidents of terrorism in KP. Raja also pointed out that the federal government’s policies, particularly regarding the expulsion of Afghan nationals, were a source of friction for the provincial government. The PTI has maintained that dialogue and negotiation are essential for overcoming terrorism, a stance that contrasts with the federal approach.

Despite these challenges, the PTI remains committed to addressing the ongoing crisis in KP and pursuing its broader political objectives, with Afridi now poised to take over as the new chief minister.
