Cristiano Ronaldo Confirms 2026 World Cup Will Be His Last

Portuguese legend says he’ll retire from football within two years

RIYADH: Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 World Cup will “definitely” be his last, marking the end of a legendary career that has spanned over two decades.

The 40-year-old Portuguese forward, who currently plays for Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr, said during a video address at a Saudi forum that he plans to retire from professional football “in one or two years.”

“Definitely, yes,” Ronaldo said when asked if next year’s tournament would be his final World Cup. “I’m gonna be 41 years old, and I think it will be the moment.”

End of an Era

Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, is aiming to appear in his sixth World Cup in 2026, to be held across the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Portugal, however, still need to confirm qualification and could do so by beating Ireland this Thursday.

He made his World Cup debut in 2006, when Portugal reached the semi-finals before losing to France. Despite multiple records, the global trophy remains the only major title missing from his illustrious resume.

Record-Breaking Legacy

Last month, Ronaldo became the all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup qualifying history with 41 goals, surpassing Guatemala’s Carlos Ruiz. He also holds the record for most international goals, with 143 strikes for Portugal.

In a recent interview with Piers Morgan, the superstar admitted retirement would be an emotional challenge. “It will be difficult? Yes. Probably will cry, yes,” he said.

Career Beyond the Pitch

Since joining Al Nassr in 2023, Ronaldo has helped attract global football stars to Saudi Arabia. His current contract reportedly earns him €200 million annually, with an extension signed earlier this year.

According to Forbes, Ronaldo remains the world’s highest-paid footballer with estimated annual earnings of $280 million — more than double that of his long-time rival Lionel Messi. Bloomberg recently listed him as football’s first billionaire athlete.
