KARACHI: The Irrigation Department has reported that the water level at Hub Dam has surged to 338 feet following days of heavy monsoon rains. With only one foot of capacity left, officials warn that the dam is on the verge of reaching its maximum limit. If inflows continue, the spillways may be opened at any moment to release excess water.

Warning Issued to Riverbank Communities

Authorities have issued urgent instructions for people living along the banks of the Hub River to evacuate without delay. Residents have been told to move with their families and livestock to safer ground. The department stressed that precautionary relocation is essential to prevent loss of life in case of sudden flooding once the spillways are opened.

Industrial Operations Asked to Halt Activities

Owners of gravel extraction sites and crushing plant operators working in the Hub River bed have also been directed to stop their activities. Machinery and laborers are being moved to higher ground as part of safety measures. Officials highlighted that ignoring these warnings could put both human lives and costly equipment at risk.

Importance of Hub Dam for Karachi and Balochistan

Hub Dam is one of the largest water reservoirs supplying drinking water to Karachi and providing irrigation support to Balochistan. The dam’s capacity and management during monsoon season are critical not only for water supply but also for flood control in surrounding areas. In the past, sudden releases from the spillways have led to flash floods, underscoring the need for caution.

Continuous Monitoring by Irrigation Department

Officials assured that the situation is being closely monitored. If the spillways are opened, it will be carried out under controlled supervision to minimize the risk to communities. The department has also coordinated with local administrations to ensure that relief measures are ready in case of emergencies.
