Imran Khan Hospital Transfer: Supreme Court Issues Decisive Order

Imran Khan hospital transfer has been ordered by the Supreme Court, which directed authorities to move the incarcerated PTI founder from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for medical assessment and treatment. The three-member bench ordered that the transfer take place within two days and that Khan remain at the hospital until the next hearing on September 16.

Supreme Court Orders Hospital Transfer

The order was issued on Tuesday by a three-member bench headed by Justice Shahid Waheed and comprising Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim.

Under the written order, authorities must arrange Khan’s transfer to Shifa International Hospital under appropriate security arrangements. The court stressed that the hospital stay should not create law-and-order problems or inconvenience other patients.

The Supreme Court also ordered the formation of a medical board to assess and treat the 73-year-old former prime minister. The panel is to include specialists in general medicine, surgery, ophthalmology and cardiology, with Khan’s personal physician Dr Faisal Sultan and his sister, Dr Uzma Khan, associated with his medical care.

Medical Concerns Behind the Court Order

The ruling follows continuing concerns over Khan’s health raised by his family, lawyers and political party.

A medical report submitted to the Supreme Court had summarized 39 medical consultations and check-ups carried out between November 2023 and August 10, 2026. The report also referred to treatment for central retinal vein occlusion, an eye condition previously diagnosed in Khan.

Reuters reported that Khan’s lawyers and family had raised concerns about significant vision loss in his right eye, while authorities had previously said his eyesight had improved following treatment.

The court nevertheless sought Khan’s complete medical record, questioning why authorities had submitted only a summary. It also discussed recommendations for further cardiac assessment, including angiography.

Family Meetings and Sons’ Calls

Beyond medical treatment, the Supreme Court addressed Khan’s access to his family.

The bench directed authorities to facilitate regular family meetings and telephone communication with his sons. The court also sought records of Khan’s meetings with his sisters and details of communications with his children.

Justice Waheed questioned restrictions on meetings with Khan’s sisters, observing that family access should not simply be treated as a privilege.

The court also directed that medical reports concerning Khan should not be used for political purposes. PTI and Khan’s family were instructed to avoid media activity or political gatherings outside the hospital.

Government and PTI Reactions

The PTI welcomed the decision and called for immediate implementation of the Supreme Court’s order. The party also urged supporters not to gather outside Shifa International Hospital, in line with the court’s instructions.

Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhary said the government would implement the ruling in letter and spirit. He maintained that matters concerning Khan’s health and legal status should be determined through the courts.

Khan’s son Kasim also called for compliance with the court’s directions and requested access for the family to communicate with and visit his father.

What Happens Next

The Imran Khan hospital transfer is expected to take place within the court-ordered two-day period. His medical condition will then be assessed by the newly constituted board at Shifa International Hospital.

The Supreme Court has fixed September 16 for the next hearing, when it is expected to review the medical situation and the information sought from Adiala Jail authorities.

The court has also warned that its facilities and directions could be withdrawn if its conditions are violated, placing responsibility on authorities, Khan’s family and political representatives to ensure compliance.
