Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has attributed the downfall of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) to reckless actions by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership, particularly former aviation minister Ghulam Sarwar, whose statements led to billions in losses. The remarks come as Pakistan celebrates the removal of its name from the UK’s air safety list on July 16, 2025, marking a turning point for the national carrier.
Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Asif accused PTI founder Imran Khan and Sarwar of mismanaging PIA, claiming Sarwar’s baseless allegations against the airline triggered a UK ban during PTI’s tenure. He described the statement as a “criminal act” that damaged Pakistan’s dignity and PIA’s financial standing, hinting at potential legal action against Sarwar for failing to provide an explanation. Asif emphasized that the PTI leadership bears full responsibility for the airline’s struggles.
The lifting of the UK ban is a significant milestone, enabling PIA to resume flights to the UK, which will benefit nearly 10 million overseas Pakistanis. Asif highlighted that this development will boost PIA’s privatization process by enhancing its market value and restoring international routes. Efforts are underway to secure operating licenses for additional destinations, including New York. The minister credited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s oversight and global regulators’ guidance for the achievement, calling it a “historic day” for Pakistan’s aviation sector.
Asif praised the collective efforts of individuals and institutions in reviving PIA, expressing optimism about its future. The government aims to privatize the airline in the next phase, leveraging its restored routes to strengthen its global standing. This milestone underscores Pakistan’s commitment to revitalizing its national carrier and boosting economic prospects.
