Minister Apologizes for National Press Club Assault, Promises Action on Journalists’ Demands

Talal Chaudhry Vows to Address Incident and Ensure Press Club Guidelines Are Followed

Islamabad — State Minister for Interior Affairs, Talal Chaudhry, issued an official apology on Friday following the assault on journalists at the National Press Club (NPC) in Islamabad. The incident, which occurred the previous day, involved police storming the premises and assaulting several journalists during a protest organized by the Awami Action Committee.

Government’s Commitment to Journalists’ Rights

Speaking at a media briefing in Islamabad, Chaudhry expressed deep regret over the incident, acknowledging its serious impact on press freedom. He assured journalists that the government would take all necessary steps to address the situation in accordance with the guidelines of the NPC and various journalist organizations. “We will ensure that such incidents do not occur again, and all demands put forward by the journalist community will be implemented,” he stated.

The police raid at the NPC occurred when journalists were documenting a protest, with police reportedly using force and confiscating cameras and mobile phones. The assault has sparked widespread condemnation, with media bodies calling it an attack on press freedom and part of a broader campaign against journalists.

Solidarity with the Media Fraternity

Chaudhry expressed solidarity with the media community, calling the assault “deeply regrettable.” He emphasized that upon his arrival at the NPC following the incident, he reassured the journalist community that the government stood with them. “I not only condemned the incident but also expressed my personal solidarity with the media fraternity,” he remarked.

Steps Towards Accountability and Reform

The state minister outlined that immediate steps were already being taken in consultation with NPC leadership, including holding accountable those responsible for the assault. “The Interior Ministry and law enforcement agencies are in constant contact with NPC leadership and will continue to extend full cooperation,” he added.

Chaudhry reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring justice and implementing all demands presented by the NPC leadership in a timely and effective manner.

Journalists’ Protest in Parliament

In response to the incident, journalists staged a walkout during the National Assembly proceedings earlier on Friday, protesting the police actions at the NPC. The walkout further highlighted the severity of the issue and the media’s resolve to seek accountability and protection of press freedom.
