Suparco Announces Supermoon Will Appear 14% Larger and 30% Brighter Than Average Full Moon

Islamabad — The first supermoon of 2025 will grace the skies of Pakistan on October 7, providing stargazers with a spectacular celestial event. The full moon will be visible across the globe, including Pakistan, as it reaches its closest point to Earth during this lunar cycle, the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) confirmed.

What Is a Supermoon?

A supermoon occurs when the Moon reaches its perigee, the point in its orbit where it is closest to Earth. This proximity causes the Moon to appear significantly larger and brighter than usual, earning it the name “supermoon.” According to Suparco, this particular supermoon will be 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical full moon.

On October 7, the Moon will be approximately 224,599 miles (361,400 kilometers) from Earth, offering a dazzling view for sky-watchers around the world.

What to Expect

This supermoon marks the first of four expected supermoons in 2025, with subsequent ones set to occur on November 5 and December 5. Another supermoon is expected in January 2026, although it will fall outside the 2025 cycle.

Astronomical experts also pointed out that when a supermoon rises near the horizon, it can appear even larger to the human eye due to an optical illusion, a phenomenon that has intrigued sky-gazers for centuries.

Why It’s Special

This rare occurrence will be the first supermoon in nearly a year, following the last one in November 2024. Sky enthusiasts are urged to step outside on the night of October 7 to witness the Moon’s brilliance as it dominates the night sky.
