PCB Suspends NOCs for Foreign Leagues After Asia Cup Defeat; Big Bash League Participation Affected

In the wake of Pakistan’s defeat in the Asia Cup final, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken the unprecedented step of suspending all no-objection certificates (NOCs) granted to national players for participation in foreign leagues. The suspension applies with immediate effect and is set to continue until further notice, as the PCB finalizes a new strategy that links future NOC approvals to players’ performance in both international and domestic cricket.

The decision, announced via a notification from PCB Chief Operating Officer Sumair Ahmad Syed, affects several prominent cricketers, including captain Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan, Haris Rauf, Shadab Khan, and Faheem Ashraf. These players had previously received approval to participate in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), but their participation is now under review.

Sources confirmed that moving forward, NOCs will be performance-based. Players who meet the PCB’s set standards in international and domestic competitions will be eligible to play in foreign leagues. Those who do not meet the criteria will need to train at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to improve their skills before seeking approval for overseas contracts.

The suspension is part of the PCB’s broader effort to ensure national players prioritize their performance for Pakistan, both on the international stage and in domestic competitions. The decision follows widespread concerns that players may have become distracted by lucrative overseas contracts.

The timing of this suspension has raised concerns for players such as Shaheen Shah Afridi, who was set to make his Big Bash League debut with Brisbane Heat. Afridi, the left-arm pacer, was picked first overall in the BBL 15 draft. Brisbane Heat had even announced the creation of a special “Shaheen Shah Afridi Fan Bay” at the Gabba for the upcoming season, further adding to the anticipation surrounding his debut.

However, with the suspension now in place, the future of these players’ participation in the BBL and other foreign leagues remains uncertain.

The PCB’s move underscores the growing emphasis on maintaining focus on national duties, signaling a shift in how the board manages its players’ commitments to both international cricket and lucrative overseas leagues.
