Petrol Price Rises as Diesel Receives Major Cut

Petrol Price in Pakistan has been increased by Rs2.97 per litre, while the price of high-speed diesel has been reduced by Rs32.63 per litre under the latest petroleum price revision announced by the federal government.
The Petroleum Division issued the revised notification for petroleum products on August 19, with the new rates coming into effect from August 20. The latest adjustment comes amid Pakistan’s ongoing daily petroleum pricing mechanism, under which fuel rates are reviewed in response to international oil prices and other relevant market factors.
New Petrol and Diesel Prices Announced
Under the latest revision, petrol has been fixed at Rs337.51 per litre, following an increase of Rs2.97.
High-speed diesel, meanwhile, has received a significant reduction of Rs32.63 per litre, bringing its new price down to Rs363.06 per litre.
The contrasting movement in the two major petroleum products means motorists using petrol will face a higher cost at fuel stations, while consumers and businesses dependent on diesel could see some relief from the substantial reduction.
The latest changes follow a period of frequent fuel-price adjustments in Pakistan. Earlier in August, the government had raised petrol by 45 paisa and high-speed diesel by Rs1.16, taking their prices to Rs325.43 and Rs383.95 respectively.
Petrol Price Increased Further
The latest Petrol Price increase adds further pressure on petrol consumers, particularly private motorists and transport users whose expenses are directly linked to fuel costs.
The increase takes the petrol rate above the level recorded earlier in the month. The government has been making frequent adjustments under its evolving petroleum pricing mechanism, with international crude prices, exchange-rate movements and other cost components influencing the calculation.
For consumers, petrol-price increases can also have broader economic implications because transportation costs can influence the prices of goods and services.
Diesel Price Sees Major Reduction
The biggest development in the latest notification is the sharp reduction in diesel prices.
High-speed diesel has been reduced by Rs32.63 per litre, with the new rate set at Rs363.06. Diesel is widely used by commercial transport, agriculture, heavy machinery and other economic sectors, making significant changes in its price particularly important for businesses and supply chains.
The reduction therefore has the potential to ease fuel-related operating costs for diesel-dependent sectors, although the broader impact will depend on transportation and other market costs.
Petroleum Levy Revised
Alongside the changes in retail fuel prices, the government has also adjusted the petroleum levy structure.
According to the information provided in the latest notification, the levy on diesel has been increased by Rs1.72 per litre, taking the diesel levy to Rs80 per litre.
The petroleum levy on petrol remains unchanged at Rs80 per litre.
The levy on kerosene has also been retained at Rs20.36 per litre.
What the New Fuel Rates Mean
The latest revision creates a mixed impact for Pakistani consumers. Petrol users will pay more at the pump, while diesel consumers will benefit from a sizeable reduction.
The contrasting adjustments also come as Pakistan continues to operate a more frequently revised petroleum pricing system. The Petroleum Division has previously explained that the pricing mechanism considers international oil-market conditions and other relevant factors when determining domestic rates.
With the new rates effective from August 20, consumers and businesses will now adjust to petrol at Rs337.51 per litre and high-speed diesel at Rs363.06 per litre.
The government’s latest decision is expected to remain closely watched by transport operators, businesses and consumers, particularly as future international oil-price movements could influence subsequent revisions.see more Pulse Pakistan
