Interior Minister Warns PTI Protests May Trigger Jail Transfer of “Prisoner”

ISLAMABAD, December 8, 2025 — Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry has indicated that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan could be transferred from Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail if ongoing protests by his party threaten the safety of other inmates. The minister did not name Khan directly but referred to “a prisoner” in his statement.

“If PTI supporters gather outside Adiala Jail and endanger other inmates, then a prisoner may be transferred,” Chaudhry said in a video message, warning that the law would act decisively in case of chaos, whether inside or outside the facility.

Tensions around Adiala Jail have intensified in recent weeks, marked by PTI demonstrations and confrontations with police and jail staff over access to the former prime minister. Last month, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi staged a 16-hour sit-in outside the jail. Protests by Imran Khan’s sisters, Aleema Khan, Noreen Khan Niazi, and Uzma Khanum, also led to their brief detention.

Officially, meetings with the PTI founder have now been banned. The Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar, confirmed that no further visits will be permitted, following the latest encounter in which Uzma Khanum was allowed a private meeting. The ban follows remarks by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, who described the PTI leader as a “mentally ill person” posing a security threat.

In a broader critique, Talal Chaudhry accused PTI of attempting to undermine state institutions and sabotage the country’s economic progress. “Only a mentally ill person can consider himself indispensable,” he said, adding that no negotiation invitations would be extended to the party. “The habit of this party is to criticise the institutions; a mentally ill person will never speak in favour of the country.”

The warnings come amid escalating political tensions in Pakistan, as the government continues to manage security and order around Adiala Jail while maintaining a firm stance against PTI-led demonstrations.
