Trilateral Talks in Kabul on August 20: Pakistan, China, and Afghanistan Discuss Key Issues

The foreign ministers of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and China are set to meet in Kabul on August 20 for a crucial trilateral discussion. Key issues on the agenda include counterterrorism measures, the expansion of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and overall regional stability.

The upcoming trilateral meeting will be attended by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. According to sources, the meeting aims to strengthen cooperation among the three nations, with a strong emphasis on counterterrorism initiatives and the advancement of CPEC projects.

This meeting comes after Afghanistan’s Interim Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, was initially scheduled to visit Pakistan earlier this month on August 5. However, due to “technical” reasons, the visit was postponed. Further details revealed that the UN Security Council had not granted permission for Muttaqi’s visit, as he remains on the UN-designated list of Taliban members.

Following the Kabul discussions, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is expected to travel to Pakistan the next day to continue bilateral talks, underscoring the importance of continued engagement between the two nations.

The trilateral talks are seen as a significant step toward enhancing cooperation on security, infrastructure development, and regional stability, especially with ongoing concerns regarding terrorism in the region.
