UAE Warns Israel Over West Bank Settlement Plans
Abu Dhabi, UAE – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) issued a stern warning to Israel on Wednesday, declaring that any efforts to annex the West Bank would be considered a “red line” for the Gulf nation. This move, the UAE emphasized, would seriously jeopardize the spirit of the Abraham Accords, the historic agreement that normalized relations between the two countries.
UAE’s Stance on the Abraham Accords and Palestinian Rights
Lana Nusseibeh, the UAE’s Assistant Minister for Political Affairs and Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, underscored the nation’s longstanding position on the Palestinian issue. In an exclusive statement to Reuters, Nusseibeh reaffirmed the UAE’s view of the Abraham Accords as a platform for supporting the Palestinian people’s pursuit of an independent state.
She stated, “From the very beginning, we viewed the Accords as a way to enable our continued support for the Palestinian people and their legitimate aspiration for an independent state.” This stance, she clarified, has remained unchanged since the signing of the agreement in 2020.
Calls for Suspension of Annexation Plans
The UAE’s criticism comes in the wake of Israel’s controversial plans regarding settlements in the West Bank. Nusseibeh explicitly called on the Israeli government to suspend these plans, warning that any action to annex the territory would undermine regional stability and the peace efforts in the region.
“Extremists, of any kind, cannot be allowed to dictate the region’s trajectory. Peace requires courage, persistence, and a refusal to let violence define our choices,” she added, stressing the importance of a balanced and inclusive approach to peace that respects Palestinian rights.
Strained Relations Amid Regional Tensions
This marked a significant escalation in the UAE’s public criticism of Israel, which had largely avoided such direct confrontations since the normalization of diplomatic ties under the Abraham Accords. The comments, reflecting deep concern over the possible annexation of Palestinian territories, come amid the ongoing Gaza conflict, which has significantly strained relations between Israel and many Arab nations.
While the UAE has expressed its support for Palestinian aspirations since the Accords, its position on the West Bank annexation is now firmly defined. Any Israeli move that threatens Palestinian territorial integrity is seen as a direct challenge to the commitments made under the historic agreements and to the broader pursuit of peace in the Middle East.
The Road Ahead: Diplomatic Strain or Cooperation?
As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how Israel will respond to the UAE’s warning and whether diplomatic tensions will rise between the two nations. The UAE’s statement reflects broader concerns among Arab nations about Israel’s settlement policies and their potential to derail long-term peace prospects in the region.
The UAE’s position could also have broader implications for other Arab nations that have followed its lead in establishing ties with Israel, suggesting that the stability of the Abraham Accords may hinge on Israel’s handling of the West Bank issue.
