USA imposes sanctions on Iran as Washington sharply escalates pressure on Tehran, targeting senior security and government officials accused of orchestrating a violent crackdown on nationwide protests that have shaken the country.
The US Treasury Department said on Thursday it sanctioned five Iranian officials, including the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme Council for National Security, commanders from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and senior law enforcement officials. The move comes amid mounting unrest in Iran and renewed enforcement of President Donald Trump’s “maximum pressure” campaign.

In a statement, the Treasury accused the sanctioned officials of being key architects of the government’s response to protests that erupted over rising living costs before evolving into one of the most significant challenges to Iran’s leadership since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the United States was intensifying financial surveillance of Iran’s leadership, warning that assets allegedly siphoned from Iranian citizens were being moved through international banking systems.

According to the Treasury, sanctions were imposed on senior figures linked to Iran’s security apparatus, including IRGC and law enforcement commanders accused of directing repression against demonstrators.
In a video message, Bessent delivered a blunt warning to Iranian leaders. “US Treasury knows that, like rats on a sinking ship, you are frantically wiring funds stolen from Iranian families to banks and financial institutions around the world,” he said, adding that USA authorities would track and target those funds.
He also urged Iranian officials to halt the violence and align themselves with public demands, echoing President Trump’s calls for restraint.

The latest sanctions also target 18 additional individuals accused of laundering proceeds from Iranian petroleum and petrochemical sales through what the Treasury described as “shadow banking” networks linked to sanctioned financial institutions.

“The United States stands firmly behind the Iranian people in their call for freedom and justice,” Bessent said, pledging to use all available tools to counter what he described as systemic human rights abuses by the Iranian state.

Protests began over soaring prices and economic hardship before expanding into broader demonstrations against Iran’s political establishment. Authorities have responded with mass arrests and force, drawing international criticism.

Separately, Trump cast doubt on the leadership prospects of Iranian opposition figure Reza Pahlavi during an exclusive Reuters interview in the Oval Office. While describing Pahlavi as “very nice,” Trump questioned whether he could command sufficient support inside Iran.
“I don’t know whether or not his country would accept his leadership,” Trump said, adding that discussions had not reached that stage.
Political analysts have echoed this caution. Sanam Vakil of Chatham House noted that while Reza Pahlavi has gained visibility among certain segments of protesters and the Iranian diaspora, his actual influence inside Iran should not be overstated. She emphasized that accurately measuring political support within the country remains extremely difficult due to repression, limited polling, and the absence of open political activity.
