Punjab CM Orders 30-Day Deadline for Fire Hydrants in Commercial Buildings

Punjab CM Sets 30-Day Deadline for Fire Hydrants

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday set a 30-day deadline for all commercial and high-rise buildings in the province to install Punjab fire safety hydrants, warning that strict action would follow for non-compliance.

The announcement came during a special meeting chaired by the CM, which included commissioners and deputy commissioners connected via video link.

Comprehensive Fire Safety Measures Approved

During the meeting, CM Maryam approved a series of measures aimed at preventing fire incidents across Punjab. These include:

  • Installation of 1,157 water hydrants across nine divisions.
  • Establishment of a new Fire Inspectorate Unit within Rescue 1122.
  • Mandatory first-aid facilities and oxygen cylinders in major commercial buildings.
  • Specialized training programs for markets dealing with chemicals, cardboard, fabric, and gas cylinders.

Modern Equipment and Mandatory Facilities

The CM stressed the need for modern firefighting equipment, ordering:

  • Use of high-expansion foam generators.
  • Installation of smoke detectors and CCTV cameras in large buildings.
  • Automatic sprinkler systems in all multi-storey buildings.
  • Regular checks on expiry dates of firefighting equipment and fire alarms.

External staircases for safe emergency evacuation and the proper functioning of fire safety equipment were emphasized as mandatory.

Specialized Training and Evacuation Protocols

CM Maryam instructed that monthly mock fire drills be conducted in all districts. Encroachments blocking entry and exit points in congested markets, including Lahore’s Shah Alam Market, must be removed. Boilers and flammable materials must not be stored in basements of multi-storey buildings to prevent fatalities.

Grief over Gul Plaza Tragedy and Solidarity

Expressing grief over the Gul Plaza tragedy in Karachi, CM Maryam said Punjab stands in solidarity with the Sindh government, the people of Karachi, and bereaved families, offering all possible assistance.

Referring to a recent fire in Lahore, she noted that approximately 300 people were present in a 25-storey hotel at the time. She credited timely SOPs and rapid response for preventing a major tragedy.

Inspections, Drills, and Enforcement

CM Maryam emphasized that fire safety measures should not be cosmetic. She instructed development authorities to enforce regulations during construction and ensure equipment remains functional.

She also directed province-wide inspections of gas cylinders, sealing substandard manufacturers, and warned against unsafe electrical wiring and improper storage of flammable materials.

“Rescue 1122 is a critical institution. We will provide the required equipment, capacity-building, and training resources,” CM Maryam added, stressing zero tolerance for worker injuries or fatalities due to negligence.
