Australia Eliminated After Ireland Washout
Australia eliminated from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after persistent rain forced the abandonment of the Group D match between Zimbabwe and Ireland.
The fixture was washed out without a toss at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, with continuous rainfall leaving the outfield unfit for play.
The result proved decisive for the group standings and confirmed Australia’s exit from the tournament.

Zimbabwe Secure Super Eight Qualification
The washout ensured Zimbabwe advanced to the Super Eight stage, while both Australia and Ireland were knocked out.
With Australia eliminated, the former champions can no longer qualify for the next round despite having one remaining group match against Oman.
Ireland were also ruled out of contention following the abandoned encounter.
Group D Points Scenario Explained
Australia are placed third in Group D with one win and two defeats. Even a victory in their final match would have taken them to four points — insufficient to overtake Zimbabwe, who reached five points after the no-result.
Ireland finished their campaign with one win, two losses, and one abandoned match, ending on three points.
The mathematical confirmation came once the Ireland–Zimbabwe match was officially called off, sealing the Australia eliminated outcome.
How Australia Eliminated Despite One Match Left
The Australia eliminated scenario was a result of earlier defeats, particularly their loss to Zimbabwe earlier in the tournament.
That setback left Australia dependent on other results, and the rain in Pallekele ultimately ended their Super Eight hopes before their final group fixture.

Zimbabwe’s Strong Tournament Run
Zimbabwe’s qualification was built on impressive performances. They opened their campaign by restricting Oman to 103 and chased the target comfortably.
They then stunned Australia by scoring 169 for 2 and bowling them out for 146, registering a 23-run victory that played a crucial role in Australia eliminated from the tournament.
Led by Sikandar Raza, Zimbabwe will now face Sri Lanka in their final group match at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium.
