Dhaka–Karachi Direct Flights Resume, Marking a Major Breakthrough in Pakistan–Bangladesh Ties

Dhaka–Karachi direct flights have officially resumed after a 14-year suspension, marking a significant step forward in restoring air connectivity between Pakistan and Bangladesh and signaling a broader warming of bilateral relations.

The inaugural flight operated by Bangladesh’s national airline landed at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport on Thursday, where it was accorded a traditional water cannon salute. Senior officials from both countries were present to welcome the historic arrival, underscoring the diplomatic importance of the occasion.

Inaugural Flight Marks Diplomatic Milestone

According to Pakistan’s High Commission in Dhaka, the aircraft departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport fully booked, reflecting strong public interest in the revived route. The inaugural journey was seen off by Bangladesh’s Civil Aviation and Tourism Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Imran Haider, and other senior representatives.

In an official statement, the High Commission described the resumption of Dhaka–Karachi direct flights as a “significant milestone” that would enhance connectivity, promote bilateral engagement, and strengthen people-to-people links between the two nations.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Bangladesh’s civil aviation and tourism adviser emphasized the importance of the Dhaka–Karachi route in expanding tourism opportunities and improving travel convenience. He stated that the national airline plans to gradually increase flight frequency while working to reduce fares to make travel more accessible.

He also expressed optimism that Bangladeshi travelers would increasingly visit Pakistan to explore its natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and diverse cuisine, further deepening mutual understanding between the two countries.

Leadership Vision Drives Connectivity

Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh highlighted that the revival of direct air travel aligns with the broader vision of Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to strengthen bilateral connectivity.

He recalled that during Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar’s visit to Dhaka in August last year, both sides agreed to take immediate steps to restore direct flights, recognizing their importance for economic, cultural, and diplomatic engagement.

Trade and Cultural Exchange on the Rise

The return of Dhaka–Karachi direct flights comes amid a wider improvement in Pakistan–Bangladesh relations. Cargo shipping between Karachi and Bangladesh’s Chittagong port resumed in November 2024, leading to a noticeable increase in bilateral trade.

Cultural exchanges have also expanded in recent months. Pakistani artists and singers have performed in Dhaka, while Bangladeshi patients are increasingly traveling to Pakistan to access medical treatment, further strengthening cross-border ties.

Shifting Regional Dynamics

The improvement in Pakistan–Bangladesh relations follows a period of strained ties between Dhaka and New Delhi after the political ouster of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Analysts view the renewed air connectivity as part of a broader recalibration of regional relationships in South Asia.

With direct flights restored, officials on both sides believe the move will serve as a foundation for deeper economic cooperation, stronger cultural connections, and sustained diplomatic engagement in the years ahead.
