Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed on Wednesday that the Israeli military (IDF) will fully implement any decisions made by the political leadership regarding operations in Gaza, amid reports of internal disagreements over the prospect of a full military occupation of the territory.

TEL AVIV – Tensions within Israel’s leadership have surfaced as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prepares to announce a new phase in the ongoing war in Gaza. Amid growing speculation about a potential full-scale military occupation of the Palestinian enclave, Defence Minister Israel Katz made it clear that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are bound to carry out whatever strategy the government ultimately decides.

“The IDF will execute decisions made by the political echelon with determination and professionalism… until the objectives of the war are achieved,” Katz stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter), reinforcing civilian authority over the military.

His statement followed reports of dissent from IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir during a high-level, three-hour security meeting convened by Netanyahu on Tuesday. According to Israeli media outlets citing anonymous officials, Zamir warned against a full occupation of Gaza, describing it as “walking into a trap.”

Instead, the army chief reportedly proposed targeted operations and strategic encirclements of Hamas strongholds—particularly in densely populated areas such as Gaza City and refugee camps—where Israeli intelligence believes hostages are being held.

Netanyahu, who insists the war aims to “complete” the defeat of Hamas and secure the release of all remaining captives, is expected to outline new military objectives soon. The Israeli press anticipates a significant escalation in operations across Gaza, possibly triggering expanded ground incursions.

The divergence in views underscores growing complexity in Israel’s military and political strategy as the war drags on. While the government appears poised to escalate, the military leadership is raising caution over the long-term consequences and feasibility of a full territorial occupation.

Despite the internal debate, Katz emphasized that the government’s directives would be followed without exception once finalized, highlighting the military’s role as an executor of national policy rather than a driver of it.

This development marks a pivotal moment as Israel weighs its next steps in a conflict that has drawn intense international scrutiny and continues to unfold in an already volatile region.
