ISLAMABAD – In a significant political development, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have called a truce following a series of verbal clashes that had strained their coalition relationship. The breakthrough came after a mediation session led by National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on Thursday.
The mediation, which took place in the speaker’s chamber, included high-level representatives from both parties. The PML-N delegation was led by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Senator Rana Sanaullah, and Federal Minister Rana Mubashir, while PPP leaders Naveed Qamar and Aijaz Jakhrani represented their party.
Tensions Over Governance Issues
The tensions between the two parties had been building over several issues, particularly the distribution of flood relief aid, the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), and the allocation of water resources. The PPP had been vocal in pushing for the disbursement of flood relief through the BISP, a demand that was rejected by the Punjab government. This disagreement, along with statements made by PML-N leaders, including Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, had created a rift between the coalition partners.
PPP leaders voiced concerns over recent remarks made by Maryam Nawaz, calling them detrimental to the unity of the coalition. They emphasized that negative statements from PML-N leadership were eroding trust and undermining political cooperation. During the meeting, the PPP reiterated that no attacks should be made against each other’s leadership and that both parties should focus on their shared governance agenda.

PML-N’s Assurance and Commitment to Resolve Differences
In response to the PPP’s concerns, the PML-N leadership expressed their commitment to addressing the grievances raised by their allies. They acknowledged that the exchange of harsh statements had created unnecessary friction and agreed to engage with their leadership to resolve the issues. The PML-N also emphasized the need to prioritize governance and public service over internal disputes.
Despite the positive tone of the meeting, the PPP made it clear that unless their concerns were addressed, they would not participate in the upcoming legislative process. This indicated that the reconciliation was still fragile, with both parties needing to make tangible efforts to rebuild trust.
Moving Forward in the National Interest
National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq expressed hope that both parties would move past their differences and work together in the larger national and public interest. His mediation underscored the importance of coalition unity, particularly as both parties share governance responsibilities at the federal level.
The reconciliation follows a day of contentious remarks, with PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah questioning the data used for flood relief distribution through BISP and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz asserting the province’s right to manage its water resources. However, both sides appear committed to resolving these differences for the sake of their coalition.
As the two major political forces in the country, PML-N and PPP’s ability to find common ground will be crucial in maintaining political stability, particularly as they face joint governance challenges. The meeting marks a pivotal moment in their partnership, with both parties expressing their intention to move forward collaboratively.
