West Indies crush Zimbabwe with a commanding 107-run victory in the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, delivering a statement performance at Wankhede Stadium on Monday.
Powered by a blistering half-century from Shimron Hetmyer and a devastating four-wicket spell by Gudakesh Motie, the two-time champions outplayed Zimbabwe in all departments to open their Super Eight campaign in emphatic fashion.
West Indies’ Batting Onslaught
After being asked to bat first, West Indies posted a mammoth 254/6 in their allotted 20 overs. The innings did not start smoothly, as opener Brandon King fell early with the score on 17.
However, the early setback proved inconsequential. Hetmyer steadied the innings alongside captain Shai Hope, before unleashing a sustained assault on the Zimbabwean bowling attack.
Hetmyer–Powell Partnership Turns the Match
Following Hope’s dismissal, Rovman Powell joined Hetmyer at the crease, and the pair completely seized control of the contest. Their explosive 122-run stand for the third wicket came off just 51 balls, leaving Zimbabwe scrambling for answers.
Hetmyer was eventually dismissed for a breathtaking 85 off 34 deliveries, smashing seven sixes and seven fours, while Powell added a powerful 59 from 35 balls. Late cameos from Romario Shepherd and Sherfane Rutherford pushed the total beyond Zimbabwe’s reach.
Zimbabwe’s Failed Chase
Chasing an imposing 255, Zimbabwe never found momentum and were bowled out for 147 in 17.4 overs. The batting lineup struggled against disciplined spin and pace, losing wickets at regular intervals.
All-rounder Brad Evans offered brief resistance with a counter-attacking 43 off 21 balls, finishing as Zimbabwe’s top scorer. Support came in limited bursts from Dion Myers (28), captain Sikandar Raza (27), and Tony Munyonga (14).
Motie Leads Bowling Dominance
West Indies’ bowling effort was spearheaded by Motie, who returned exceptional figures of 4/28. He was well supported by Akeal Hosein, who claimed three wickets, while Matthew Forde chipped in with two.
Zimbabwe bowlers Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava took two wickets apiece, but their efforts were overshadowed by West Indies’ dominance.
What the Result Means
The resounding victory gives West Indies a significant net run-rate boost in the Super Eight stage, while Zimbabwe face an uphill task after suffering their first defeat of the tournament. Hetmyer was named Player of the Match for his match-defining innings.
